Witchfire, the new shooter from The Astronauts, has received its first major update since entering early access in September 2023. The update aims to address some of the biggest complaints about the game, including difficulty scaling and the Calamity system. The new update adds a significant amount of content, including six new character classes, five new weapons, three new Calamity types, four new spells, 10 new enemies, a new shop vendor, new events, raids on witch vaults, and new magical items and traps. This is a substantial addition that greatly expands the gameplay options available to players. One of the major changes in the update is the introduction of a “calamity meter” that will give players a rough idea of when and why trouble is coming. This should add clarity to the previously opaque Calamity system, making it feel more fair and less arbitrary. Additionally, the difficulty scaling has been adjusted through the introduction of a new feature called Gnosis, which allows players to “over-level” without triggering an increase in enemy difficulty. These changes are very welcome, as they address some of the key frustrations players had with the game. The original difficulty system tied enemy strength to player level, leading to situations where players could inadvertently make the game much harder for themselves by leveling up too quickly. The addition of the Gnosis system should help alleviate this issue. Overall, the Ghost Galleon Update for Witchfire is a significant step forward for the game. The addition of new content, along with adjustments to the difficulty and Calamity systems, should make for a more enjoyable and balanced experience for players. I’m looking forward for feedback about Witchfire to see how these changes and additions come together and enhance the overall gameplay experience.
