Sony-owned studios, including Insomniac Games, have recently been under pressure to make staff cuts due to the high cost of triple-A development. This week, the hackers who breached Insomniac and demanded a ransom of 50 BTC, or around $2 million, released 1.67 terabytes of data, which included meeting notes that claimed “there will be one studio closure” at PlayStation Studios. Sony and Insomniac have yet to comment. Documents also show Insomniac was asked to cut 50-75 jobs, and the best option presented was to “cut deeply” into the Wolverine and Spider-Man 3 teams. The leaked documents demonstrate the precarious nature of triple-A video game production, with huge costs and big risks if the games don’t sell in the tens of millions. Sony’s push for live service games has seen them bring in Bungie and Jade Raymond’s Haven Studios, but has resulted in Naughty Dog cancelling The Last of Us multiplayer game and Sony reviewing the 12 live service games it had in the works, committing to only 6 by the end of March 2026. It is clear that Sony, like much of the video game industry, is looking to cut spending, but unfortunately for developers this means scaled back-teams and layoffs.
