Red Dead Redemption, originally released 14 years ago, has finally made its way to PC. This PC port is considered the best version of the game yet, with added graphical features and improvements that make it the smoothest and most beautiful rendition of Red Dead Redemption to date. The extended draw distances and native 4K resolution create a much cleaner image, making the game hardly look its age. One of the most significant upgrades in the PC port is the ultrawide support, which enhances the game’s themes and cinematic inspirations. However, the game’s cutscenes are still rendered in a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is a missed opportunity as modders have already addressed this issue. Additionally, the PC port removes the original multiplayer and cooperative components, which is disappointing considering the groundwork laid by Red Dead Redemption for the popular GTA Online. Despite the visual and performance improvements, the standout aspect of Red Dead Redemption remains its stellar writing. The game manages to juggle complex themes in an authentic way, portraying colorful characters who personify the vices, virtues, and myths of the American Dream and the untamed West. John Marston’s involvement in the messy politics of Mexico highlights the discomfort of his narrow-minded quest for redemption, adding depth to the game’s themes and ending. Overall, the PC release of Red Dead Redemption is the perfect opportunity for those who have never played it to experience the game. However, for those who have already played the game on other platforms, there isn’t much else besides improved visuals.
