Monster Hunter: Wilds Review

Capcom’s Monster Hunter: Wilds is a game designed to welcome new players into the series. The game aims to make the process of hunting monsters more flexible and less complex. The campaign in Wilds features likeable characters and a shorter duration compared to previous Monster Hunter games, allowing more players to complete it. The game’s structure allows for seamless exploration without the need to return to town between hunts. This change eliminates the repetitive task of preparing for each hunt and enhances the overall gaming experience. Additionally, the game features stunning, dynamically changing environments that shift between different weather states, making each hunting ground unique. In terms of combat, Wilds offers a more forgiving experience while still maintaining the core aspects of Monster Hunter battles. The introduction of Focus Mode makes it easier to target specific monster parts and deal more damage. However, the game lacks the challenging monster encounters that were present in previous titles. The Insect Glaive, a popular weapon in the series, has received significant tweaks, making it easier to use and maintain buffs. While the post-game content offers a slight increase in difficulty, it fails to provide the level of challenge expected by veteran players. The game’s ease of obtaining rare materials and crafting powerful armor sets also diminishes the thrill of the loot chase. Despite its shortcomings, Monster Hunter: Wilds offers a highly customizable gaming experience, including accessibility features, UI customization, and extensive options for character and party customization. The game supports seamless online multiplayer, cross-play, and quality-of-life improvements for solo players. While Monster Hunter: Wilds succeeds in welcoming new players and offering a customizable experience, it falls short in providing the challenging endgame content that veteran players expect. The game may require additional updates or expansions to satisfy long-time fans and maintain engagement over time.
