Fortnite has partnered with Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse to introduce Godzilla and King Kong skins to the game. But this collaboration goes beyond cosmetics. In every round of battle royale, one lucky player gets the chance to play as Godzilla, towering over buildings and wreaking havoc on the map. The playable Godzilla mechanic works as follows: there is a 40% chance of a rift spawning in every game, allowing the first player to transform into Godzilla. This rift appears about three minutes into the match and is marked on the map for all players. However, there is a minute delay before it can be used, ensuring that the Godzilla role doesn’t automatically go to the closest player when it spawns. Additionally, there’s a 25% chance that King Kong will appear at the beginning of the match, dropping Monarch-branded supply drops. When Kong appears, Godzilla will also show up in the same match, but Kong won’t be present in every match featuring Godzilla. Once transformed into Godzilla, the player remains in this form for up to ten minutes, with their health depleting over time or from damage inflicted by other players. When the health bar reaches zero, the player reverts to normal, and the player who dealt the most damage to Godzilla receives a medallion granting them a recharging dash ability and a mythic quad rocket launcher. It’s important to note that the player cannot die while playing as Godzilla, and there are no rewards for being Godzilla aside from the experience itself. This iteration of the playable character concept is an improvement over past events because it occurs near the beginning of the match, preventing it from unbalancing the endgame as previous events did. Overall, the Fortnite collaboration with the MonsterVerse introduces an exciting and unique gameplay mechanic, adding a new level of excitement and unpredictability to the battle royale experience.
