Avowed: Traditional RPG Excellence

Obsidian’s new game, Avowed, is a return to the traditional action RPG style that the developer is known for. Set in the fantasy universe of Pillars of Eternity, the game features familiar RPG elements such as party-based storytelling, looting, and combat. The dialogue and story are particularly well done, with player decisions having a significant impact on the game’s outcome. The game follows the player, a chosen Godlike with magical powers, as they are granted a high level of authority by the Emperor to handle a mysterious plague of madness called the Dreamscourge in the Living Lands. Throughout the adventure, players will have the opportunity to unravel the mystery of the Dreamscourge and make decisions that will shape the game’s narrative and ending. Avowed features an eclectic cast of companions, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. While the social links and romancing options are fairly shallow, the banter and camaraderie with the companions add depth to the game. The game is filled with lore that builds upon the world established in the Pillars of Eternity series. It also includes a handy reference guide for key places, factions, and concepts unique to the game’s world, making it easier for players to navigate the fantasy setting. Combat in Avowed involves facing off against various fantasy creatures and enemies, with options for both magical and martial character builds. The combat feels smooth and competent, although the variety of opponents may leave something to be desired. The open-world hubs offer side quests, minor puzzles, and hidden chests to keep players engaged outside of combat. Exploration is a significant aspect of the game, with parkour elements adding an extra dimension to the gameplay. The game encourages players to engage with its mobility system, providing opportunities for treasure hunting and trap avoidance. While Avowed doesn’t introduce many groundbreaking ideas, it includes smaller innovations that enhance the overall experience. The game’s stamina and encumbrance systems are designed to minimize frustration, and the absence of major glitches or technical issues makes for a smooth gaming experience. Overall, Avowed stays true to the traditional RPG formula and executes it well, offering a familiar yet satisfying experience for fans of the genre. Despite drawing heavily from past RPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Age, the game’s strong storytelling, world-building, and polished combat make it a worthwhile addition to the genre.
