Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in feudal Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, featuring prominent historical figures like Oda Nobunaga and Fujibayashi Nagato. The game allows you to play as two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, with different gameplay styles and abilities. Stealth mechanics are a major focus, with a new global illumination system affecting enemy vision and the ability to hide in shadows or create darkness. Players can now knock out foes, crawl in a prone position, and use a grappling hook for dynamic swinging and stealth opportunities. Combat includes the use of various weapons such as katanas, spears, and rifles, with each weapon having its own skill tree and the ability to craft and personalize your katana. The game also features a revamped Anvil game engine, introducing a season system that affects gameplay and NPC behaviors, as well as a detailed ecology system and dynamic weather conditions. The map, similar in size to Assassin’s Creed Origins, features a range of locations including towns, trading posts, farmland, castles, mountains, and forests. The non-linear campaign allows for freedom of approach and autonomy in completing main quests, side quests, and world activities. Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on November 15 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Mac, and Amazon Luna.
