Apex Legends: Season 20 Story Insights

Apex Legends is celebrating its 20th season and 5th anniversary this month, with lead writer Ashley Reed sharing insights into the game’s ongoing narrative. This season, there won’t be a new Legend introduced to allow players to focus on the celebration and keep the story straight after two lore-heavy seasons. The narrative will center around Horizon and potentially Ash, with hints of time-traveling technology from Titanfall 2. The game’s evolving storyline has taught Reed the importance of subtle storytelling and engaging smaller, subtler stories, in addition to big story beats. While no new Legend will join the roster this season, players can look forward to a new series of in-game lore drops called “vignettes,” which will feature fully voiced and animated content. The aim is to make the game’s lore more central and accessible to players. The upcoming year will see an evolution of the Kill Code animated web series, with a closer tie to in-game content and seasonal story. As for the next big antagonist, Reed hinted that it may not be who players expect. Reed also clarified that her name inspired the character Ash’s human name, despite the character’s mean persona. Writing for a live-service game like Apex presents challenges, but Reed is focused on making the story feel unique and engaging. She is proud of the tighter connection between the narrative and game design, with solutions being found to seamlessly integrate plot points into the game. Apex Legends Season 20: Breakout launches on Tuesday, February 13.
